What makes this file useful

  • Titles are procedurally generated ("The Silent Horizon"), so there are no real film names to worry about licensing.
  • rating and votes are independent random draws — a good teaching example of two variables that look like they should correlate but do not.
  • year spans nearly three decades, which gives you real buckets for by-decade analysis.

Use cases

  • Sort and filter to the top-rated films per genre
  • Group by decade and compare average rating or revenue
  • Test a correlation between rating, votes and revenue
  • Practise text filtering on the title column

Frequently asked questions

Is this IMDb data?

No. It is not scraped from IMDb or any other site. Titles, ratings and revenue are all synthetic.

Why use it instead of a real movie dataset?

Because it is tiny, license-free and predictable — ideal for a lesson or a screenshot without downloading a multi-megabyte public dataset.

How many rows?

200 rows plus the header.
